Theresa Gayle Payton, age 57, of LaGrange, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025. Born on September 30, 1967, in Louisville, Kentucky, Theresa was the beloved daughter of Jessie and Donna Nation.
Known for her infectious laughter, quick wit, and vibrant spirit, Theresa was truly the life of every party. She had a heart as big as her personality — caring, selfless, and always willing to put others before herself. Theresa spent over a decade as a dedicated Direct Support Professional at Cedar Lake, where her compassion and commitment made a lasting impact on the lives of those she cared for.
Theresa shared a beautiful life with her husband, Joe. Together, they created countless memories — from spontaneous adventures to their cherished trips to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Whether they were visiting Smith Berry Winery or enjoying weekends camping under the stars, their love was filled with laughter, joy, and shared moments that meant everything.
One of Theresa’s greatest joys was her family. She shared a special bond with her daughter, Alexandria, with whom she spoke daily — laughing, gossiping, and sharing life’s ups and downs. She was also inseparable from her son, Jessie, who brought her endless pride and happiness. She loved their conversations, especially listening to him share fascinating history facts — moments she cherished deeply.
Music was another passion of Theresa’s — she enjoyed all genres, but her favorite song was Mama, I’m Coming Home by Ozzy Osbourne, a tune that captured her soul’s depth and warmth.
Theresa leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and fierce honesty. She will be remembered for her bold spirit, her generosity, and the way she made people feel truly seen and cared for.
Theresa is preceded in death by her parents, Jessie Nation and Donna Spears Nation.
Left to cherish her memory, Theresa is survived by her loving husband of 28 years, Joe Payton Jr; 2 children, Alexandria Payton and Jessie Payton; stepchildren, Elizabeth Newton and Tawnja Morris; 3 step grandchildren, Zackery Newton, Zayden Newton, Kylee Morris, and Christopher Morris; bonus kids, Kimberly and Melissa; and a host of extended family and close friends.
