Richard Dawson Aylor

Nov 16, 1942 — Nov 6, 2026

Goshen, KY

Richard Dawson Aylor, 83, passed away on November 7, 2026. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose life was defined by faith, kindness, humility, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved. He was born on November 16, 1942, the beloved son of Wilbur and Bernice Aylor in Ashland, Kentucky.

Richard was the spiritual leader of his family, a steady and dependable presence, and a man whose faith guided the way he lived. He was humble and reliable, a fully present father who was always there for his family. With his joyful spirit, goofy personality, and natural ability to bring peace to any situation, Richard had a special way of making people feel welcome and loved. He was full of kindness, a friend to everyone, and never missed an opportunity to share a laugh or offer a helping hand.

For 51 years, Richard devoted his professional life to teaching Latin and Greek at Kentucky Country Day School, where he influenced generations of students and became a beloved and unforgettable part of the school community. As the PA announcer for both basketball and football; he was the cherished Voice of the KCD Bearcats, a familiar voice that will be fondly remembered by students, families, and alumni alike. Richard especially enjoyed traveling to Europe with student groups throughout the years, sharing his love of learning, history, and the world beyond the classroom. Known affectionately by his students as a "punster," he delighted in punishing them with his endless supply of puns. His quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and ability to find laughter in everyday moments made him a teacher they would never forget.

Beyond the classroom, Richard faithfully served as a bivocational pastor for several churches throughout Kentucky and Indiana. His love for Scripture and commitment to sharing God's Word were central to his life. He was also a devoted supporter of Walnut Street Baptist Church's outreach, mission, and television ministries, believing deeply in the importance of reaching others with the message of Christ.

When he wasn't teaching, preaching, or spending time with family and friends, Richard enjoyed cheering on his beloved UK Wildcats, traveling to the Florida Panhandle and the Appalachian Mountains, reading his Bible, and pursuing his studies in Christian apologetics. Whether sharing his knowledge, telling a joke, encouraging someone in their faith, or simply being present for the people he loved, Richard made a lasting difference in the lives of those around him.

Richard's legacy is one of faith, devotion, laughter, and genuine kindness. He was a loving family man, a dedicated educator, a faithful servant of God, and a friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His presence, humor, wisdom, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur Rankin Aylor and Bernice Lee Dawson Aylor; and his In-laws, Jerry Clark, Sue Aylor, and John Thaxton.

Left to cherish his memory, Richard is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Jewel Ann Aylor; children, Rebecca L. Renaud (Matt G.), David R. Aylor (Jessica E.), and Michael L. Aylor (Ally J.); grandchildren, Jacob, Noah, Eden, Elli, Judah, and Josie; siblings, Beverly Jean Aylor Clark, James Lloyd Aylor, and June Lee Aylor Thaxton; many nieces/nephews; and a host of extended family and close friends.
