Chris Carey, 67, Prospect, KY passed away on May 8th, 2026.
Chris was born in Louisville, KY and attended St. X. He began his career in the contracting business with his father and ultimately built his legacy in Chris Carey Construction where he crafted high quality homes in the area’s most sought after locations like The Breakers, Norton Commons, Paramount, and Brentwood. He became known as a builder who delivered above expectations and with unwavering honesty and integrity. His attention to detail, hands-on way of working, and uncompromising standards of excellence elevated his reputation, his craft, and his community. Chris always gave more than he received and stood firmly by his values.
Chris’s high standards went beyond building. As a boy, his family affectionately called him “Pigpen” because he loved getting filthy outside—prompting his mother to hose him down before he could come in. Yet as a man he was dedicated to cleanliness and was constantly cleaning, maintaining spotless cars and trucks, and proudly insisting on doing his own laundry (mixing every color and fabric with surprising success). He was passionate and competitive about maintaining weed-free, well-manicured lawns, and kept everything around him in order.
Chris loved golf as much as he loved building. He cherished his time spent on the course with friends, especially when he won money from them (Klaus). He enjoyed action movies, sports including F1 racing, and Saturday date nights. He took great pride in his grilled steaks and had a legendary collection of clothes and shoes. Chris shared a loving, playful, and devoted relationship with his fiancée, Kristina. He enjoyed cooking their dinner nearly every weeknight, attentively cared for her when she was sick, and teasingly evoked the “thirty second rule” when impatience got the best of her. Together, they embraced the hobby of vegetable gardening and Chris especially loved growing big tomatoes. Reserved by nature, a highlight of both their days was when he would open up fully when they sat down for dinner each night, recounting every detail of his day—from job-site challenges and solutions to conversations with his crew and clients. Chris’s rare, uncontrollable giggles when something truly struck him as funny were among the greatest joys for those closest to him.
Having no children of his own, Chris genuinely cared for Kristina’s sons, Lane and Landon, asking about them daily, spending time with them whenever possible, and sharing his knowledge of guns. His caring nature extended to pets as well and he was by Kristina’s side—and her dogs’—through their final days and moments. Landon especially remembers Chris as polite, thoughtful, and genuinely fun to talk to, even when getting him talking took a little prodding. Chris’s keen attention to detail, his commitment to quality in his work, his willingness to always help, and his take charge manner left a lasting impression. His knowledgeable advice and contributions to their lives will be remembered with gratitude.
While the future of Chris Carey Construction is uncertain, his legacy will remain in the homes he built and countless people whose lives he touched. He will be remembered as a man who led and inspired by example, and as a quiet, strong, loving, and patient partner and friend whose actions spoke louder than his words. Chris is survived by his fiancée, Kristina Merrill, and her sons, Lane Merrill and Landon Jones; his brothers and their spouses: Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Carey, Mr. and Mrs. David Carey, Dr. and Mrs. John Carey; extended family members; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Geneva Carey, his father, Norbert Carey, and his sister Denise (Carey) Mott.
